Catalyst scrap facts

A Valuable Resource

The catalytic converter in your car is critical to reducing harmful emissions, but once it is used up, it becomes a very important resource in metal recycling. Catalyst scrap is highly sought after because of the unique content.

What makes catalyst scrap valuable?

The operation of the catalyst is based on converting toxic exhaust gases (such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons) into less hazardous substances. This is made possible by an internal, honeycomb, ceramic or metallic substrate coated with bullion:

  • Platinum (Pt)
  • Palladium (Pd)
  • Rhodium (Rh)

These three metals are rare, have high daily rates, and are expensive to extract from the Earth's crust. The amount of these metals varies depending on the catalyst model, which is why the price of scrap catalysts varies widely.

Why is recycling important?

  1. Economic Gain: Thanks to the precious metals, both individuals and companies that sell their end-of-life catalysts often receive a good remuneration.
  2. Environmental benefits: Recycling the metals from scrapped catalysts requires significantly less energy than mining new raw material. It reduces the need for mining and helps conserve natural resources.
  3. Sustainable Management: Recycling ensures that hazardous substances are handled responsibly and that the valuable metals are returned to the cycle for use in new products.

The process for recycling often involves grinding the ceramic material (the monolith) down to powder, analyzed for its exact metal content, and then sent to specialized refineries to extract the pure precious metals.

Frequently Asked Questions When Trading Scrap

1. When do I get paid?

Payment for the scrap metal you sell to us is made within 30 days of the arrival of your goods at one of our facilities. Our conditions are due to the fact that we store our scrap grades for a longer period and thus be able to deliver higher volumes to smelters. This, in turn, allows you to get a higher scrap price.

If you want to get a lower scrap price but faster payout, there are operators who offer direct payment.

2. How does your pricing model work and how can I profit from it?

Unlike a large number of other players, Skrotify takes a greater risk when trading scrap metal by offering a daily scrap price. We update the scrap price every day based on the commodity market. You as a customer will usually get a significantly higher scrap price than if you go to one of our competitors because you have to wait a little longer for your payout.

3. How does Skrotify contribute to sustainability and a circular economy?

We drive sustainable change by digitising the recycling chain and maximising the value of every kilogram of scrap. This reduces carbon emissions and energy consumption, and contributes directly to the UN's global climate goals and a more circular economy.
