- The world's most recycled consumer product: Lead-acid batteries have an incredibly high recycling rate. In Europe, it is located at about 99%! This makes lead one of the most successful recycled metals.
- Minimal Quality Loss: The lead can be recycled almost unlimitedly without losing its quality. The bulk of the recycled lead is used to manufacture new batteries.
- Great energy savings: The recycling of lead is very energy efficient. The process requires much less energy than to produce new lead from virgin raw material, thus reducing the climate impact.
- The entire battery is taken care of: The recycling process is extensive:
- Lead: Melts down and turns into new lead ingots.
- Acid: Separated, purified and neutralized (often it is converted into water). Residues of sulfur can be reprocessed into new sulfur products, including sulfuric acid.
- The plastic: Crushed, melted down and used to make new plastic products, often new battery casings.
- Hazardous waste: Despite the high recycling rate, lead-acid batteries are classified as hazardous waste due to the heavy metal lead and the corrosive sulfuric acid. It is therefore crucial that they are properly handled and recycled to avoid leaks that can damage the environment and health.
- Profitable to Recycle: Since lead is a valuable metal, as an individual or company you can often get paid when you hand in your lead-acid battery to a recycling center or scrap dealer. The price follows the LME (London Metal Exchange) price on lead.
